The Study Buddy Backpack + Add On Packs

The Study Buddy is a backpack sewing pattern that is not only beautiful but super practical too. 

With the additional (optional) add on pack (more coming soon!) you can level up this pattern to turn it into a unicorn also. 

This is an Intermediate + sewing pattern. It has a bound construction and you will learn some fun techniques while sewing up this bag.

The Unicorn Add On Pack is the first add on for the Study Buddy

This add on pack and gives you all the templates and instructions to create a magnetic closure forelock, mane, ears and horn to really give a wow factor to your bag.

Note that while SVGs are not included in the main pattern due to size, they are included in the add on packs.

You Will Need

Main Study Buddy:

*Fabric:

• Main/Outer Fabric: H: 1m (39”) x W: 1.4m (55”) or 2 x 45cm / 18” rolls
• Lining Fabric: H: 1m (39”) x W: 1.4m (55”)

Interfacing and Stabiliser:

• Non-Woven Interfacing: H: 1m (39”) x W: 1.4m (55”)
• Woven Interfacing: H: 1m (39”) x W: 1.4m (55”)
• Fusible Fleece H: 1.25m (50”) x W: 0.7m (27.5”) (or Foam Stabiliser)

Hardware and Notions:

• Main Zipper: Size #5 – 1 x 64cm (25 1/4”) with 2 pulls attached, facing each other
• Front Pocket Zipper: Size #5 – 1 x 38cm (15”) with 1 or 2 pulls attached, facing each other
• Zipper Pockets Zippers: Size #5 – 2 x 21cm (8 1/4”) with 1 pull
• 2.5cm (1”) Webbing: 2 x 58cm (22 3/4”) and 2 x 27cm (10 5/8”)
• Rucksack Strap Sliders: 2 x 25mm (1”)
• Elastic: 2 x 7cm (2 3/4”) x 2cm (3/4”) lengths
• Bias Binding: 3m (120”) x 1cm (3/8”) when folded

Optional:

• Rivets (double capped): 6 x 8mm (5/16”) x 8mm (5/16”) posts
• Scraps of Decovil Light or Heavy

(Optional) Unicorn Add On:

*Fabric:

The following fabric amounts are worked out for 30cm (12”) rolls of faux leather. Of course, you can use scraps and there are some elements that you can use such as fraying fabric (like cotton) on the Ears and Back Of Front Forelock.

For the non-fraying fabric, you can use faux leather or felt. However, felt is not very long-lasting, so please use

caution.

Obviously you can choose whichever colours you like, but for the sake of clarity, these are the colours in this pattern.

Colouring pages are included to design your own Unicorn!

*Outer (Main) Fabric:

• Pink Non-Fraying Fabric: W: 40cm x H: 30cm (approx. W: 16” x H: 12”)
• Green Non-Fraying Fabric: W: 40cm x H: 30cm (approx. W: 16” x H: 12”)
• Yellow Non-Fraying Fabric: W: 10cm x H: 30cm (approx. W: 4” x H: 12”)
• White Non-Fraying Fabric: W: 12cm x H: 30cm (approx. W: 5” x H: 12”)
• Black Non-Fraying Fabric: W: 12cm x H: 30cm (approx. W: 5” x H: 12”)

*Optional:

Small piece of fusible foam Stabiliser for the horn and scraps of Decovil for the magnet installation.

*Notions:

• 1 x 18mm (3/4”) Magnetic Clasp.
